Lipped poison bottle, 'hydr...'clear glass, empty, for tincture of henbane, English, 1860-1900

Hyoscymus or Henbane is a poisonous plant whose seeds, roots and leaves are used in medical treatments. They are used as a diuretic, a muscle relaxant and to relieve aches and pains. The plant’s odour is a narcotic used to induce sleep and as pain relief. It is a horrible smell which is why the plant is also known as Stinking Nightshade. It is called “Henbane” as it is poisonous to poultry.

A tincture is an alcoholic solution of a medicine.
