Only five hundred of these figurines of a nursing sister of the Nightingale Nursing School at St Thomas’ Hospital were made. It was one of a series of four designs showing nursing sisters. The Nightingale Nursing School was set up by Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) in 1860 as part of St Thomas’ Hospital in London. The earliest trainee nurses were given a year’s training and the school is still in existence today – now known as Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery.
