Left boot, for use with leg support, British military issue, 1900-1930
Issued by the British military, this left leather boot would have been worn by a serviceman whose leg injuries had left him with one leg shorter than the other. It was designed to be used with a leg support, which would assist the weakened and injured muscles and bones by keeping them straight. The support would have slotted into the hole which is visible in the heel.
Millions of men were left permanently disabled by their wartime service. This shoe may have assisted the wearer in his return to civilian life.
