Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Middlesex token, Pig's meat, end of 18th century. (DH Mddx 842b). Issuer Thomas Spence, 1794 or 1795. Obverse ‘Thos. Spence, Sir Thos. More, Thos. Paine: Advocates for the rights of man’. Reverse A pig trampling on the regalia of Church and State and ‘Pig’s Meat Published by T. Spence London’ surmounted by a cap of liberty. Notes ‘Pig’s Meat’ was a periodical published by Spence. It was subtitled ‘Lessons for the Swinish Multitude’ the latter being taken from Burke’s ‘Reflections on the Revolution in France’, published in 1790. Burke was against the revolution.
