Pilot TV-37 Candid 3" portable television receiver, 1947-1949.

A Pilot TV-37 television receiver ('suitcase' set), made in the United States c. 1948.

This 3 inch screen set cost $99 when new and was the first to go on sale in the USA for under $100, at a time when larger sets sold for $300 or more. They were a popular gift for students going to university. The set came in a suitcase-style carrying case which also held the folding aerial. Although designed to work on the USA 525 line system, some were brought in to the UK and converted to 405 lines. The initial low cost of the sets made it worth the effort to convert.
