Painting, oil on canvas. Poster artwork for London Midland & Scottish Railway, 'The Peak District, Peveril Castle' by Leonard Campbell Taylor, 1924. Depicts a picturesque village in the Peak District divided by a sloping country lane surrounded by trees on either side. Beyond the village is a steep hill with the silhouette of the ruined Peveril Castle in the background. The poster was one of the LMS's Royal Academy series. Framed, unglazed.
Leonard Campbell Taylor was first encouraged to complete a poster design by Norman Wilkinson, a prolific poster artist who in 1923 convinced the publicity managers of the newly formed London, Midland & Scottish Railway that it should employ Royal Academicians to add a touch of prestige to their new brand.
Taylor had trained at the Royal Academy and was a regular and productive exhibitor, but this landscape of Peveril Castle in the Peak District was not a typical subject for him.
Many railway posters created between the 1920s to the 1960s, like this one, played on notions of changeless rural landscapes, a deep past and an enduring sense of national identity.
