(A note on the back of this painting records that R Gooch was the wife of J L Gooch who was George Stephenson's secretary and chief draughtsman during the construction of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway and was engineer of the Bolton & Leigh Railway, Manchester & Leeds Railway and other railways).
