Painting, oils on canvas, portrait of Samuel Laing, Chairman, London Brighton & South Coast Railway, by Pieter van Havermaet, 1872. Depicts Laing, balding with a white beard and wearing a dark suit, white shirt, black tie and red socks, seated in an armchair. One arm rests on the chair, the other on a paper on an adjacent table. In the background is a panelled wall and tapestry, and there is an ornate carpet on the floor. Laing was Chairman of the LBSCR between 1848 and 1855, and again between 1867 and 1896. He was also chair of the Crystal Palace Company, a Liberal Member of Parliament, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, and a published author. The painter was also known as van Havermett and van Havermach.
