Marconiphone mirror lid television receiver model 702, c. 1938. Lid is not original.

The model 702 cost 60 guineas when new. The image on the horizontal 12 inch screen was reflected onto, and viewed via, the mirror on the lid of the case. Because the cathode ray tube is very long (it fills the whole height of the cabinet) it was mounted vertically in the cabinet. Mounting the tube this way meant that if the tube shattered, the glass flew up in the air rather than directly at the viewer. The cabinet is hand made by a skilled cabinet-maker.
