Model (Scale 1:6) of the McCormick reaper shown at the Great Exhibition, 1851

1:6 scale model of the McCormick reaper shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851

The McCormick reaper became a popular exhibit at the Great Exhibition of 1951. Compared with earlier models a seat had been provided for the driver, and the height of the cutting edge, which was a modified version of Hussey's scalloped cutter, could be adjusted. Reel diameter could be altered and the reel drive was by pitch chain. Sheaves still had to be tied by hand, but it was said that the machine could do work of 40 men with sickles.

Further improvements were made by Messrs, Burgess and Key of London who secured the manufacturing rights in the country.
