Five Wallace Flexihub internal jugular cannulas

1973

Five 'Wallace Flexihub Internal Jugular Cannulas', made by H G Wallace Limited, with adaptions by Alan Gliston, United Kingdom, 1973

A cannula is a small tube placed into a vein to deliver treatments or remove fluids.

The ‘Flexibhub’ was designed by company Wallace to prevent blood spillage when being inserted into the jugular vein in the neck. Anaesthesiologist and intensive care specialist, Alan Gilston (1928-2005) recognised that this design could also prevent air entering the vein when the needle was removed. He also asked them to attach a plastic sleeve to the cannula so it could be inserted without wearing sterile gloves if needed and prevented skin contamination too.
