Painting by Gilbert Daykin, 1886-1939 . "Markham's Ponies", 1928. Oil on board; [sight] 37.5x50cm in frame 50x63x7.5cm. Two miners push a loaded tub to the left, along the rail road, with light coming from lamps hanging at their belts. Showing sagging roof supports, beams marked "Paid" for piecework sections, dated 2/4/28, with "WB", the Deputy's initials.
Daykin worked as a miner at a pit near Sheffield and he produced a number of vivid artworks showing what the physical work of a coal miner was like down the pit. Sadly he was killed in 1939 in a mine shaft accident. Eleven artworks by Daykin were gifted by his family to the Science Museum in 1978.
