Painting by Gilbert Daykin, 1886-1939. "The Tub: At the end of the coalface", 1934. Oil on canvas; 50x60cm, in frame 62.5x73x7.5cm. Miner clears round a tub in an awkward space, possibly at the end of a face. A roof prop is in imminent danger of crushing him under the weight of material above. Another miner works further along to the left, tub and track visible in the glow of the lamp.

Daykin worked as a miner at a pit near Sheffield and he produced a number of vivid artworks showing what the physical work of a coal miner was like down the pit. Sadly he was killed in 1939 in a mine shaft accident. Eleven artworks by Daykin were gifted by his family to the Science Museum in 1978.
