Certificate. 'Order of Industrial Heroism', founded by the Daily Herald. Awarded to John Axon (posthumously), 8th August, 1957. Illustration on the certificate shows St Christopher. There was text on the back of the frame relating to this. This text has been removed from the frame and kept on the object file for reference. John Axon GC was an English engine driver from Stockport (Edgeley Depot) who died while trying to stop a runaway freight train on a 1 in 58 gradient near Buxton in Derbyshire after a brake failure.
