Tinder-pistol (length 7 ins) of brass, with mechanism of iron and wooden butt; very plain and of unusual type; large receptacle for sulphur-matches and spare tinder in form of a brass barrel in front, closed at end by a hinged lid; late 18th or early 19th century. England. [Nos 1078-1097 have the pistol-action mechanism enclosed in the body of the pistol].
