Tinder-pistol (length 5 ins) of brass, with mechanism of steel and wooden butt; a small design representing military trophies engraved on each side; an exceptional example, in that the sparks given off ignited a priming of gun-powder, placed in a priming-pan of ordinary type, and this in turn ignited some tinder placed in a receptacle at side; probably early 19th century. England.
