The Ministry of Health hoped to discourage smoking by highlighting the financial cost of the habit. This 1965 poster was issued the same year it became illegal to advertise cigarettes on television. The poster carried the message: 'It doesn't pay to smoke…why risk your health for cigarettes', illustrated with a burning £1 note. Today, the National Health Service calculates a 10% increase in the price of cigarettes saves around 3000 deaths per year from smoking related diseases.
