A photograph of the Cheltenham Torso Murder Mystery, taken in February 1938 by George W Roper for the Daily Herald.
The photograph shows Brian Sullivan's grave by night, Leckhampton cemetery. On 3 February 1938, Mr H C Price found bloodstains, and three salmon fishermen discovered a human torso in the River Severn, near Haw Bridge, Tewkesbury. The discovery led to a murder investigation which remains unsolved. The body was believed to be that of Captain William Butt, though it was never proved. Brian Sullivan, the son of a nurse who looked after Butt's mother, was found dead at Tower Lodge, near Cheltenham a couple of weeks before the discovery of the body.
