The photograph shows a sailor leaning out of a porthole on the SS Tilapa, docked at Avonmouth Dock, Bristol. SS 'Tilapa' was the first ship to bring bananas into Britain after the second world war. During the war most foodstuffs were rationed, especially those brought from overseas. Rationing did not officially end in Britain until 1954.
