A Woodburytype portrait of John Everett Millais (1829-1896), taken by Lock and Whitfield in 1876. This Woodburytype is taken from a series of seven volumes entitled 'Men of Mark'. Published between 1876 and 1883, each volume featured 36 portraits of prominent men of the time.

Best known for his painting 'Ophelia', Millais founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with his friends William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882).

Millais entered the Royal Academy Schools at age 11, the youngest ever pupil, and exhibited there from age 17. He thrived at the Royal Academy, becoming President in 1876.

This Woodburytype is taken from a series of seven volumes entitled 'Men of Mark'. Published between 1876 and 1883, each volume featured 36 portraits of prominent men of the time. A brief biographical essay by Thompson Cooper (1837-1904) accompanied each portrait.
