Main section of image taken up by gully in which tracks can be seen passing under a bridge, carts pulling loads of earth along tracks occupy the foreground and men are at work in the gully, clumped together under the bridge, alongside horses. Workmen are seen against the right side of the gully wall laying covering material over the cut earth, above this, other workmen and horses are huddled at the top of the wall along a flat plain of ground, behind them are townhouses in the foreground and disappearing to the right in the background. Trees are visible at the right and left edge of the image and fields lie beyond the houses on the left half of the image beyond the bridge.
