Isle of Man Railway locomotive no. 3, narrow gauge 2-4-0 tank engine, named 'Pender', Order Number 2965, made by Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd, Gorton Works, Manchester, 1873.

Sectioned c.1980 to reveal the internal workings for museum display.

Before railways, few people would have travelled for holidays, but by the 1840s entrepreneurs were organising trains to take people on day trips and seaside vacations. As tourism developed in the 19th Century, the Isle of Man became a popular holiday destination, particularly for Lancashire mill workers on their annual ‘wakes week’ holiday. In 1873 the Isle of Man Railway opened to promote commerce and the tourist trade. This locomotive was the third of the first batch of three locomotives ordered for the railway. Between 1873 and 1926 all the Isle of Man Railway’s steam locomotive purchases were from Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd.

This locomotive was named after a director of the company Sir John Pender, a key figure in the establishment of the underseas telegraph networks that linked the British Empire, a textile merchant with warehouses and offices in Manchester, and a Liberal MP, who later invested in the Isle of Man Railway. As a Manchester cotton merchant, Pender’s fortune was likely made at least partly resulting from slave labour in the southern states of the USA. His biography (Moyle, 2018) notes that ‘He certainly had business contacts in the cotton-producing Southern states, but what he witnessed when he visited the Southern States in 1849, meant that his sympathies were much more aligned with the Unionists when it came to slavery.’
