Replica Otto four-stroke gas engine, made by Museum of Science and Industry and Crossley Premier Engines Ltd, Manchester, 1982. Slide valve, flame ignition, speed 180 rpm, power output 3 horsepower.

In 1876, German Nikolaus August Otto built the first four-stroke engine. The Otto engine was the first practical alternative to the steam engine and his design improved the noisy atmospheric engines which had limited power. The same principal of compressing fuel and air before ignition is used in all present day internal combustion engines.
