Three core electrical distribution cable
- Around 1930
Mounted sample of three core electrical distribution cable. Used by Manchester Corporation on distribution network between 1930s and 1950s.
Early networks, like the one in Manchester, were small enough to carry DC electricity. Manchester Corporation used three-core cable to supply electric power around the city. Dr John Hopkinson invented the three-core distribution system in 1882. A strong waterproof covering allowed the cable to be buried.
