Nokia 9000 Communicator mobile phone, manufactured by Nokia, 1995-1996.
The Nokia 9000 Communicator mobile phone made a splash when it was launched by integrating PDA functions into a mobile phone. While not the first time that the two kinds of device had been combined, the Communicator was commercially successful despite being physically large and very expensive. Unlike later ‘smartphones’ the device had clearly separated interfaces for its two kinds of functionality. While closed the Communicator looked like a large, but otherwise ordinary, mobile phone. However, the Communicator could open up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a screen that could be used to operate a range of programs and access the web.
