The photograph shows a model house designed by Henry Roberts for working-class families, funded by Prince Albert (1841-1910) and shown at the Great Exhibition. Prince Albert was President of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes and was fascinated by the problems of providing housing for those on a low income. These houses proved to be an extremely popular exhibit and the design actually went into construction shortly after the exhibition ended.
