This photographic study of Mary Emily ' May' Prinsep (1853-1931) forms part of the Herschel Album, created by Cameron for her friend Sir John Herschel (1792-1871). La Contadina is Italian for 'peasant girl'. The term was often used as a title for works of art in the Victorian period.
