Hand woven decorative cotton quilt known as a Caddow quilt, Bolton, 1886.

This caddow quilt was made to commemorate the wedding or engagement of John and Mary Lomax on 23rd April 1886. The recipients came from a family of weavers. A Caddow quilt is a type of hand woven, all cotton, decorative quilt very specific to the Bolton area. They were produced from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries on a hand loom and the finished piece was often dyed to give it a pure white appearance. What is distinctive about the quilts are the raised ‘sheds’ of weft thread that make up the pattern, created by the weaver using a small hook. They were made for domestic use even after the mechanisation of weaving and in the later years of their manufacture, like this one, they were increasingly made to commemorate events like marriages.
