A printing block with a surface image of a map showing Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia.

In 1895, Zimbabwe and Zambia were named Southern Rhodesia and Northern Rhodesia after the British coloniser and imperialist Cecil Rhodes, who had seized vast territories in southern Africa and supported apartheid policies. In 1964 Northern Rhodesia became independent and changed its name to Zambia. Southern Rhodesia gained independence in 1980 and changed its name to Zimbabwe.
