Mr. Hailstone, a prominent member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, was the last artist for whom Sir Winston Churchill sat at Chartwell. He has recently been in the United States and Canada, where he painted a number of well-known people, including Sir Paul Mellon, head of the Washington National Gallery.
