Vaginal specula help diagnose and treat vaginal and uterine disorders. This type of vaginal specula was devised by surgeon Sir William Fergusson (1808-77). He was a leading surgeon based in London during the mid-1800s. He also developed other surgical instruments. Some of these are still used.

The speculum has a mirrored interior. Light could be reflected inside the vagina to allow internal examination once the speculum was inserted. It has an elastic gum covering. The speculum was made in London by surgical instrument maker Simpson.
