1854 - Edward James Harland moved to Belfast to become manager of Robert Hickson’s shipyard in Queen’s Island.
1858 - Hickson offered Harland his interest and goodwill in the shipyard for £5,000 and the company became Edward James Harland and Company.
1861 - Harland formed a business partnership with Gustav Wilhelm Wolff, creating Harland and Wolff.
1869 - exclusive business agreement with the White Star Line began.
1874 - Harland recruited William James Pirrie as another partner.
1880 - opened its own engine works. 1885 - due to a government proposal restricting trade, and the company's connections with Germany, it became Queen’s Island Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd.
