Smith Meters Ltd, an electric and gas meter firm has its origins in 1834, where it was established in Snow Hill, in the City of London, moving its headquarters to 186 Kennington park Road, London, SE11 in 1865. The company became Smith Meters Ltd in 1915. In 1929 an additional factory on Rowan Road, Streatham Vale, London, Mitcham, SW16 was built.

This company, with UGI (Meters) Ltd., later made up the Meters Division of the UGI Group. By 1951 Smith Meters Ltd. was part of United Gas Industries.
