Originally worked as a coal merchant with Lloyds but turned his hand to printing in 1785 as he became aware of logography. He decided to start a daily advertising sheet, the Daily Universal Register which was first issued in 1785. However, in 1788 he decided to abandon advertising and logography and turned his attention to creating a newspaper which he called 'The Times'.
