1718 - started his career in Deptford shipyard. 1744 - became Deputy Master Shipwright at Woolwich. 1755 - served as the joint Surveyor of the Navy alongside William Bately. Famously designed H.M.S. Victory. 1768 - knighted. 1771 - died in Bath, but was buried in Ipswich.
