Began engraving 1720, first taking on coats of arms and plates for booksellers. In 1730 he began to carry out the moralising works such as Gin Lane that he is best remembered for. In 1757 he was appointed serjeant painter to the king, a lucrative position that expected him to paint and gild all of the King's residences.
