Pharmacist Rokusaburo Sugiura began selling photographic materials at his store in Konishiya Rokubē, Tokyo, in 1873; second shop Konishi Honten (Konishi Main Shop) opened 1878; in 1903 began producing the Cherry Portable Camera, Japan's first brand name camera; company renamed Konishiroku Honten in 1921; released the Konica camera in 1948; company changed name to Konica in 1987; merged with Minolta in 2003 to form Konica Minolta Holdings; ceased photographic processing, camera and film production, but company still trading in 2010.
