Engraver, printmaker, publisher and property developer; after Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) perhaps the most important publisher of illustrated books during the era of the coloured aquatint; born Manchester 1775; brother of artist Daniel Orme (1776-1837) and William Orme (1771-1854); moved to London; published first engraving (by his brother Daniel), served as engraver to King George III 1799-1820, and to Prince of Wales from 1799-1830; 1800 opened shop on Conduit Street (corner of George Street), London; exhibited portrait at Royal Academy 1801; opened shop 59 New Bond Street 1801; closed shop 1824 to concentrate on property development in Bayswater area of London, where Orme Square named after him.
