1832 - along with a syndicate, purchased the steamship William Fawcett which became, arguably, the first P&O ship. 1835 - joined with Willcox and Anderson to form P&O. 1837 - signed the first commercial contract for carrying mails by sea with the Admiralty, on behalf of P&O.
