1864 - initially formed by James & William Hall and Thomas Russell, to build marine engines for Alexander Hall and Company. 1868 - built first ship, the iron steamer Kwang Tung. 1869 - built the barque Umvoti for J T Rennie. 1897 - incorporated as Hall, Russell & Co Ltd.
