1809 - pattern maker at Bradley and Horseley ironworks in Birmingham.
1814 - moved to London and worked for Henry Maudslay as a turner and fitter.
1816 - set up own business in Deansgate, Manchester.
1832 - patented six separate improvements in steam locomotion.
1852 - wound up his business and became a consulting engineer. Among many things, he invented the centrifugal railway.
