1840 - Andrew Barclay started in business with Thomas McCulloch

1842 - set up own business and patented gas lamps

1847 – Barclay set up workshops specialising in manufacture of winding engines for local coal mines

By 1859 - company began producing locomotive

1871 – Andrew Barclay established Barclays & Co, for his younger brother, John, and his four sons, James Wilson, Andrew junior, William and Robert

By 1882 - both companies declared bankrupt

1886 - Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. formed

1892 - firm incorporated as Andrew Barclay Sons & Co., Ltd.

1930 – acquired John Cochrane (Barrhead) Ltd, engine makers,

1963 - acquired the goodwill of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd., Glasgow

1972 - company acquired by the Hunslet Group (based in Leeds, Yorkshire)

1989 – company name changed to Hunslet-Barclay Ltd
