Part of the Mitsubishi Group; multinational specialising in optics in imaging (binoculars, cameras, microscopes, measurement instruments, semi-conductors, lenses); founded 1917 as an optical company, Nippon Kōgaku Tōkyō K.K (Japan Optical Industries Corporation); manufactured first camera in 1948; name changed to Nikon Corporation in 1988 (in line with the name of its successful Nikon camera range); in 2006 Nikon discontinued manufacture of all but two film cameras, concentrating instead on digital.
