The Cheshire Lines Committee was the second largest joint railway in Great Britain. In their publicity material, the company was styled as the Cheshire Lines Railway. Initially the Cheshire Lines group had been formed by a joint committee of the Great Northern Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and made official in 1863. However it did not become wholly independant until the Cheshire Lines Act of 1867. In the 1923 grouping, the parent companies became part of the London Midland & Scottish Railways and then in 1948 became part of British Railways. The company retained its identity its own identity up until 1948.
