1852 - trained under the watercolourist Thomas Shotter Boys. 1860 - designed stained glass in England. 1868 - travelled to Italy to study Venetian mosaics. 1871 - appointed the first Slade professor at University College, London. 1894 - appointed director of the National Gallery, London. 1896 - knighted. 1902 - became baronet.
