1853 - having completed his apprenticeship at Thames ironworks, he obtained an appointment in London as a surveyor at Lloyds. 1874 - joined the Board of Trade as chief shipwright surveyor. 1880s - modified existing Influence Machines which led to early x-ray machine called the Wimshurst. 1898 - elected FRS.
