In 1837, Patrick Stirling began his engineering career as an apprentice to his uncle, James Stirling, at the Dundee Foundry. In 1851 he became locomotive superintendant of the Caledonian & Dumbartonshire Junction Railway and then, in 1866, he took the same position with GNR, at Doncaster; after just ten months in the job he became chief locomotive superintendant. He remained with GNR until he retired, in 1895, ten days before his death.
