Travelled to the Far East to document eastern cultures; became a portrait photographer in Mayfair. He wrote extensively on photography and gave lectures about the Far East. In 1881 he was appointed as photographer to the British Royal Family and became successful as a photographer for members of High Society. After retiring he spent a large amount of time in Edinburgh.
