His involvement with the scientific preparations for the 1869 research voyage of HMS Porcupine led him to devise, with the assistance of the instrument maker L. P. Casella, the Miller–Casella thermometer, a pressure-resistant version of Six's self-registering thermometer, for use in the depths of the sea.
