c. 1850 - employed on the telegraphs of the South Eastern Railway under Mr C V Walker; c. 1850 - Acting Engineer to the Submarine Telegraph Company, position held for 8 years; during this period, also served as London Secretary to the British and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company. 1860, joined United Kingdom Telegraph Company as Manager and Secretary, later Electrician and Engineer. 1870, joined Indo-European Telegraph Company as Manager and Secretary, later Managing Director with a seat on the board, retired in 1899. Also a Director of the Western and Brazilian Telegraph Company from 1877, elected Chairman in 1888. Remained Chairman when the Western and Brazilian Telegraph Company amalgamated with the Brazilian Submarine Company as the Western Telegraph Company, retired in 1902. 1895, elected Chairman of the Amazon Telegraph Company. 1897, became Chairman of the West India and Panama.
